History of St. Mark's Church
In 1880 in a schoolhouse on US 1, 5 miles away from the
Virginia Theological Seminary,
Rev. Dr. K. Hammond and A. J. Willis founded Groveton Mission. This later
became Christ Church. The Groveton Mission was staffed for more than half a
century by students from the Seminary. During the mid-1950's both the name of
the congregation and the location of the church were changed. The name of the
congregation was changed from Christ Church to St. Marks. The primary reason
was to prevent confusion with
historic Christ Church, Alexandria, The congregation moved to its present
location on South King's Highway.
