About the Vestry

St. Mark's lay governing body is the Vestry, consisting of 12 members elected from the congregation. The vestry is responsible for chosing one of the members as Senior Warden of the parish, and one as Junior Warden. Towards the end of the calendar year, the vestry nominating committee requests nominations for parish members who are willing to serve on the St. Mark's Vestry. The nominating committee is made up of the four retiring members of the Vestry. Four new Vestry members will be elected for three-year terms at the Annual Meeting in late January or early February. Although congregation members will be able to make nominations at the Annual Meeting, St. Mark's strongly recommend that individuals willing to serve notify the Nominating Committee by the beginning of the calendar year, so that the church can publish biographies and distribute them before the annual meeting if at all possible.

Canonical Requirements of Nominees

Laypersons who are confirmed adult communicants in good standing of the parish are eligible. They must be at least 16 years of age, have been confirmed or received before a bishop of the Episcopal Church, and in the previous year, been faithful in "working, praying, and giving to the spread of the Kingdom of God."

Duties of the Vestry (Canon 12):

Each Vestry shall cooperate with the Rector in promoting the spiritual welfare of his charge, and assist the Rector in his duties. Each Vestry member shall support the programs of the Church and continuously encourage the members of the congregation to do the same and to give generously towards the support of those programs. Each Vestry member shall extend personally a hearty welcome to newly baptized, confirmed, received, or transferred members of the congregation.

Each Vestry person shall see that the Rector is financially supported properly, that his salary is paid in full with regularity, together with pension payments and other obligations due from the church. The Rector's compensation should be reviewed annually.

A Vestry person should be able to sign the following declaration: I, < vestry member's name > do believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the Word of God, and to contain all things necessary to salvation; and I do yield my hearty assent and approbation to the doctrines, worship and disciplines of the Episcopal Church; and I do promise that I will faithfully execute the office of Vestry member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, in Region 6 in the County of Fairfax, according to my best knowledge and skill.'

A Vestry person must be able to attend Vestry meetings, usually held the first Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m., and the Vestry retreat, shortly after the annual meeting each year. He or she must also 'be known to the Treasurer of the parish.' This usually means that a financial pledge is made to the ministries of St. Mark's for 2004.

Expectations also include that the individual is committed to his or her own spiritual growth, including regular worship and attendance at parish events and programs through the year. Vestry members at St. Mark's should faithfully and responsibly participate in a ministry or program of the parish for each year they are on the Vestry, and they will work towards the spiritual growth of the parish.
